Beamsplitter Compensation Plates

×

TECHSPEC Beamsplitter Compensation Plates are designed to equalize the optical path length in systems using plate beamsplitters at a 45° angle of incidence. Manufactured from precision fused silica, these windows ensure both transmitted and reflected beams experience the same material thickness, preserving phase integrity and wavefront quality. When paired with TECHSPEC λ/10 Plate Beamsplitters, compensation plates help minimize dispersion and maintain high interference contrast in demanding optical systems. TECHSPEC Beamsplitter Compensation Plates feature a 30 arcmin wedge to minimize internal interference and back reflections making these compensators are an excellent choice for precision applications. These compensator plates are ideal for interferometry, metrology, and spectroscopy applications requiring precise beam path matching.

Product Details

When used in Michelson and other interferometers, beamsplitters can cause small differences in optical path length and dispersion due to their thickness. Compensation plates can correct for this difference and are especially useful in broadband systems. When selecting a compensation plate, the compensation plate should be of the same substrate and thickness as the beamsplitter used to ensure the correct adjustment in path length.

Diagram showing beam path in an uncompensated interferometer setup. (Please note, reflected beams are depicted offset for demonstrative purposes). Numbers refer to number of passes through the beamsplitter substrate. The blue beam (initially reflected at the beamsplitter) travels through the beamsplitter substrate three times, while the orange beam (initially transmitted through the beamsplitter) travels through the beamsplitter only once. This results in a differing path length and dispersion between the two beams once they arrive at the sensor.

With the addition of a compensator plate of the same thickness and refractive index of the beamsplitter, the orange beam now experiences the same change in path length and dispersion as does the blue beam.
