Edmund Scientific

Educational Outreach sponsored by Edmund Optics®

At Edmund Optics®, we are passionate about giving students the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of optics and get excited about science! That’s why EO’s educational outreach program, Edmund Scientific, was developed in 2014. Edmund Scientific offers an array of learning opportunities including classroom and community experiences, educational resources, and outreach support.

Scientific exploration, facilitated by educators and engineers, is promoted through engaging and thought-provoking activities. Each activity is designed to stimulate scientific thinking and highlights different uses and properties of optical components. As new technologies become increasingly reliant on optics, we are proud to expose the next generation of thinkers, inventors, scientists, and engineers to this vital and wonderful field!

Programs

Programs are currently available to the Southern New Jersey/Philadelphia and the Tucson regions. If you are not local to these regions, please see our classroom activities and Inspiration Kits or contact us to discover how we can help you bring engaging optical learning to your class or program.

All events are free of charge! The goal of Edmund Scientific is to introduce future scientists and engineers to the world of optics and we aim to make that opportunity available to all!

Please note that we will not be able to honor all the program requests that we receive. A collaboration with Edmund Scientific is not guaranteed.

School Visit

Educational outreach team members and optical engineers visit your classroom! Hands-on, engaging experiments are provided to introduce students to optical concepts. Students work with a variety of optical components while learning about real-life applications. Students work in small groups and rotate through experiments with experts in the field. School visits are best suited for grades 5-12.

STEM Nights

Educational outreach team members provide and conduct hands-on experiments at STEM nights.

Field Trips

Visit Edmund Optics Barrington to experience optical engineering in action! During this visit, students tour the fabrication cell where optical components are manufactured, visit the distribution center to pack and ship items, conduct experiments with optical engineers, and experience virtual reality! Field trips are best suited for grades 5-12 with a maximum number of 20 students.

Collaboration with camps, museums, and non-profit organizations

Please contact us to discuss how Edmund Scientific can collaborate with you!

Classroom Activities

Designed to highlight a specific optical concept, our classroom activiy kits can be used as a learning extension to an Edmund Scientific visit or to enhance your own optics-based lessons.

Reflection
  • Reflection – the bouncing of light – is a simple and well-known concept that can make up some seriously cool interactive activities!
Refraction
  • Refraction – the bending of light – can be shown in a multitude of fun, experimental ways!
Total Internal Reflection
  • Total Internal Reflection (TIR) is an optical phenomenon that most people are unfamiliar with, but that they rely on everyday. Simple yet engaging experiments showcase the most common uses of optical fibers.
White Light and Color
  • White light gives us the ability to see everything around us. Explore white light, color, and just how different our world would appear without white light.

For access to our experiments
and for material requests, contact us.
