How to Integrate Focus-Tunable Lenses into Optical Systems

Mounting Configurations | Opening Zemax Files | Understanding Lens Prescription

Manually Focus-Tunable Lenses

Optotune Focus-Tunable Lenses are available in both manual and electrical options. Optotune Manually Focus-Tunable Lenses are lenses where the user can manipulate the focal length and change the shape from convex to concave by rotating the outer ring. Optotune Electrically Focus-Tunable Lenses are convex lenses with variable focal lengths. These tunable lenses can replace the functionality of a complete lens kit in laboratory settings, offering the on-demand adaptability needed to avoid the complex mechanical manipulation associated with a multi-lens system. Ideal for researchers and OEMs alike, focus-tunable lenses offer continuous focusability over a specific focal range, allowing the user to custom-tune the lenses for optimum performance. Specific applications of focus-tunable lenses include lighting, laser processing, ophthalmology, machine vision, and microscopy. When purchasing an Optotune Electrically or Optotune Manually Focus-Tunable Lens, it is important to consider how to integrate the product into a desired optical system. To make this process as simple as possible, consider configurations for mounting and integration into ZEMAX® optical design software.

MOUNTING CONFIGURATIONS

Metric Bar-Type Holders

There are several options for mounting Optotune Electrically Focus-Tunable Lenses. For modular mounting, use #57-977 TECHSPEC® 30mm T-Mount Achromat/Thick Lens Mount. This optical mount provides male and female T-mount threads to easily mount the tunable lens to additional T-mount components. In addition, 30mm Diameter TECHSPEC Cage System Plates can be used to create a entire system around the tunable lens. It is important to keep in mind that if the tunable lens is embedded in tubing, it is necessary to drill a hole to connect the wire leads to a DC power supply. A DC power supply is not included with Optotune Electrically Focus-Tunable Lenses. It is recommended to purchase a power supply with 0.1mA resolution, a maximum voltage of 5V, and current of 0.5A.

For non-modular mounting, there are several optical mounts to use. #03-676 40mm English Bar-Type Lens/Filter Holder or #55-530 60mm Metric Bar-Type Lens/Filter Holder offers fixed mounting configuration. #64-563 or #64-564 30mm Optic Component Mount offers a secure and fixed mounting configuration. All mounts can be attached to optical breadboards or laboratory tables via posts and post holders.

Optotune Manually Focus-Tunable Lenses cannot be integrated into modular mounting systems because it is important to allow the housing to move. As a result, use #03-676 or #55-530 Bar-Type Lens/Filter Holder.
