Calcite Polarizers are used in polarizing applications that require broad spectral ranges or high extinction ratios. Calcite Polarizers are often available in Glan-Laser, Glan-Taylor, or Glan-Thompson Varieties. Edmund Optics offers a variety of Calcite Polarizers, including Glan-Laser, Glan-Taylor, or Glan-Thompson Polarizers, along with Lyot Depolarizers. Lyot Depolarizers are used to transform polarized or partially polarized light into unpolarized light.
Glan-Thompson Polarizers are designed to offer large fields of view along with high extinction ratios. The unpolarized light is directed into the face of the Glan-Thompson Polarizer, causing the extraordinary rays to transmit through to the other side, while the ordinary rays are deflected. Glan-Taylor Polarizers transmit the extraordinary rays, while reflecting the ordinary rays. Glan-Laser Polarizers are also transmit the extraordinary rays while reflecting the ordinary rays, but are designed with a superior grade of calcite compared to Glan-Taylor Polarizers, minimizing both beam scatter along with distortion. Glan-Laser Polarizers offer high damage thresholds, ideal for use in laser applications.
